Vancouver Sun Run 2013 – results

The Vancouver Sun Run 2013 was held last Sunday, April 21st. My friend J ran with me this year. I am proud to report that I’ve improved by 25 minutes :D

J saved the section of Monday’s newspaper where my name appeared:

And I am stoked to see Sean Astin‘s name on the same page. Of course, it’s alphabetical order!

You might remember Mr. Astin as Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings films.

He joined this year’s run because of what happened in Boston. Cool huh. Of course we did not see him at the event. There were at least 40,000 participants. And I’m pretty sure he was in one of the first batch of runners, being a celebrity and all. Plus he’s not a bad runner, as you can see by his results. I think he’s wearing one of the white bibs. Whites are in about the first 1/3 of the race.

Good for you Mr. Astin.

Day 106 of 366

The Vancouver Sun Run 2012.

The decision to join the Sun Run this year came after a friend of mine suggested I should give it a try, back in January when I started going back to the gym. I was told training for the Sun Run would be a good opportunity to exercise more and develop a routine, not to mention a definite weight loss in the end heheheh.

Most people train for it extensively in the months prior to the event, to be able to run the 10km straight within the least amount of time. There are classes around the lower mainland that focus on preparation for this race. Well, I do not like treadmills and indoor running, and for the record, I was never a fan of running/jogging. I would much rather box and spar. But I thought at the time, this would be different, let’s see if I can do this.

For my “training” I ran a total of 5 times, I think, once every Saturday only when the weather was nice. One block at a time so I wouldn’t kill myself. The week of the race, I got sick, so really I had no exercise for days. In short, for my first Sun Run, I had a crappy prep. Surprisingly, I was able to run the first 3Km.

Here are select photos:

I walked the rest of the 7Km. Maybe next year I will train better. The Sun Run was a very good experience nonetheless. I definitely recommend it to the locals. And if you happen to visit Vancouver in April, you might be able to catch it and join it! The 2013 Sun Run will be held on April 21st next year.

Stickers and Stationeries

Ever since I signed up for the BC SPCA charity donation and the Children’s Hospital donations, I’ve been getting all sorts of charity invites. To this day I’ve collected hundreds of mailing address stickers, little notepads, greeting cards – not to mention the calendars I get at the beginning of the year. I have yet to find use for them, since I don’t really mail letters or send people greeting cards.

Day 120 of 365

Saturday / April 30, 2011

Today I joined the Heart & Stroke Foundation’s Big Bike Event 2011. Basically, it’s an event where one rides the “big bike” — as you can see from the picture, it is like a big topless bus with about 30 bikes connected together. Participants get to join a team (as in my case, I was with my work team), pedal altogether for about 20 minutes around the event location’s vicinity (escorted by police and all!), and raise money towards Heart & Stroke Foundation.

It’s the first time for my workplace to participate, and also a first time for myself. It was so much fun. I’ve decided to join again next year.
